The Holidays are a time to overeat, overdress, get emotional, be romantic, schmaltzy and sentimental...it's part of the fun and the magic. There is no city on earth that gets dressed up for the Holidays like New York! The imagination and talent - the sheer effort that goes into putting on this dazzling show - is mind-blowing, inspiring, awesome. It is an unforgettable magic carpet ride that returns us to our childlike sense of wonder, no matter how old we are. The Holidays take us to another place, a heart-swelling place of love, light and joy.

All nations and cultures celebrate holidays and festivals with that eternal symbol of hope and longing - light. There is more light in New York during the Holidays than at any other time of year. We share photographs of this festival of lights with you, with excerpts and quotes from famous books, films, shows, poems and personalities. We hope you enjoy the ride!

The tree at Rockefeller Center draws thousands of visitors each Holiday season. It has over 3000 lights!

"Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart."
- Washington Irving

Pontius Pilate: "I dreamed I met a Galilean, a most amazing man. He had that look you very rarely find, the haunting, hunted kind. I asked him to say just how it started, and how it all began, I asked again, he never said a word, as if he hadn't heard. And next, the room was full of wild and angry men, they seemed to hate this man. They fell on him and then disappeared again. Then I heard thousands of millions crying for this man, and then I heard them mentioning my name, and leaving me the blame."

Tevye: "A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But here, in our little village of Anatevka, you might say every one of us is a fiddler on the roof trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without breaking his neck. It isn't easy. You may ask 'Why do we stay up there if it's so dangerous?' Well, we stay because Anatevka is our home. And how do we keep our balance? That I can tell you in one word - tradition!"

From "Fiddler of a Roof"

"The moment we break faith with one another, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out." -James Baldwin

Let the straight flower bespeak its purpose in straightness - to seek the light.
Let the crooked flower bespeak its purpose in crookedness - to seek the light.

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better place than we found it, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Walt Whitman

"There were six dolls to be taken up and dressed every morning, for Beth was a child still, and loved her pets as well as ever. Not one whole or handsome one among them; all were outcasts till Beth took them in; when her sisters outgrew these idols...they passed to her...Beth cherished them all the more tenderly for that very reason, and set up a hospital for infirm dolls. No pins were ever stuck into their cotton vitals; no harsh words or blows were ever given them; no neglect every saddened the heart of the most repulsive; but all were fed and clothed, nursed and caressed, with an affection that never failed."
